2G2K Circus: Au Revoir Rudy

Finally, Jeff and I get a chance to turn our attention to the republicans.

Pundits will spend an inordinate amount of time dissecting why Rudy Giuliani did not win the republican nomination, but the answer is a real simple one, Rudy G, does not want to be President. While he may like the idea of being the most powerful man in the free world, Rudy Giuliani does not want to be president, and it's unfortunate that he could not have just come out and said that three years ago. Contrary to what the other leading candidates are trying to convince us, being president of the United States is actually a pretty crappy job. Sure you get great health care, plenty of vacation time and you can travel the world six times over, but for all the work you spend to get that job, not the least of which includes milking your friends and professional colleagues for millions of dollars just so you can post your resume, our American presidential process is becoming more ludicrous by the day.

But since he had people in his ear telling him he should run, Rudy ran, and then somewhere along the way he decided to pass up the first five republican contests to focus on Florida. Why Florida? His people told him Florida because there are so many former New Yorkers there, many of whom would likely be grateful to him for rescuing this city from its inevitable doom. Of course, as we have now seen, even his Florida policy was a smoke screen, because many of the snowbirds who love themselves some Rudy G actually vote elsewhere.

Sometimes I wonder if Rudy's campaign was a smokescreen to get Hillary Clinton to prepare herself for one kind of general election, only to hit her with another. Hillary's decades of experience in Washington, brokering deals and not behaving like a tyrant would in the end endear her to so many more voters. If there's one thing Hillary had over Rudy it's experience and earlier in her campaign see seemed insulted that Obama and Edwards would dare mount a campaign, because she was destined to win and destined to take on Rudy. Hillary versus Rudy is that championship game matchup that people pine months for in advance only to have a Cinderella come in and upset one of the favorites, and robbing fans of their long awaited tilt.

Rudy's campaigning in Florida because he has to, he has to go through the charade before conceding that his plan was flawed, or just being honest and saying, I'm not really into being President.
