Au Contraire

"You may forgo buying a new, all-titanium performance refrigerator, but you can't go without your DSL connection or your mobile phone." When I saw that line in David Kirkpatrick's recent Fortune magazine article explaining why the tech industry remains profitable during this recession I had to laugh. "Or" is likely the key word in that sentence because as I have proven the last month or so, one can live without a cell-phone, especially if you're like me and are often tethered to a desk with DSL/email access. I'm not sure if I'm ready to be like my good friend Phil K. and forego cell phones altogether--in fact--I know I'm not, but this month hiatus has given me a chance to rethink how I was using my old beloved blackberry. I never felt chained to it like many of my lawyer friends do, but I was intimately connected and dependent on it for everything from facilitating interactions with friends to giving me license to not plan ahead.

The tech industry clearly does not need me, but it's good to be reminded every once in a while that we can just let go.
