MySpace Transmission
New York Times reporter, Brian Stelter, recently reported that Myspace has created a new portal to offer performance videos. Named Transmissions, the site will offer musicians to develop their own content and offer them to fans at market rate.
While I think it's a terrible name, Tranmsmissions is precisely what Myspace needs if it expects to rebound and reinvent itself in the face of the "Facebook revolution." Myspace is light years ahead of its social networking competitor, Facebook, in content and cache among musical artists and aficionados. What it only needs is a way of leveraging that advantage and Transmissions appears to be a step in the right direction, albeit a horribly named one.
As Myspace goes through this period of transition it may want to re-think the entire "friend" concept that has outlasted its necessity among the popular social networking portals. "Friending" worked well for Friendster, but the relationships that Myspace seeks to foster between musicians and music lovers does not fit most people's definition of a "friend." Going with something like "inspiration," a more common term in music and art parlance would help the company take another step forward in distinguishing itself from its competitors.
